How to Keep Your Cavoodle Warm in Winter

Winter’s here, and while your Cavoodle might have a beautiful coat of curls, they still feel the cold,  especially those lightweight, low-shedding coats our oodles are famous for. As a cavoodle mum of two, I love to snuggle with them on the lounge when the weather gets cooler but I also know that when I am not around, they need to keep warm & cosy too

So here are some ways I have found work well to keep your cavoodle warm in winter.

Layer up with a quality dog coat
Cavoodles can get chilly on walks (just like us), especially early mornings and late nights. A well-fitted dog coat is one of the easiest ways to keep them snug and warm. More on dog coats below so keep reading 👇

Use a Heated Dog Bed or Blanket
A soft, heated dog bed or self-warming blanket provides extra warmth for naps, particularly for older Cavoodles or those with joint issues. You can find options like the Snooza Self-Warming Cuddler or Petlife Heated Pads.

Keep Them Indoors During Extreme Cold
Limit outdoor time during frosty mornings or windy days. If they do need a quick toilet break, pop on a coat and keep it short.

Provide Extra Blankets in Their Sleeping Spot
Cavoodles love to burrow. Add a few soft fleece blankets to their bed so they can nest and stay warm. (I mean, who doesn’t love to snuggles under a warm blankie)

Keep Up with Regular Grooming
It might be tempting to skip trims in winter, but long, matted fur actually makes it harder for their coat to insulate properly. Keep up with regular brushing especially after you remove their coat to ensure their hair isn’t getting matted.

Adjust Their Diet Slightly (If needed)
Some dogs burn more calories keeping warm in winter. Check with your vet if your Cavoodle seems hungrier than usual or loses a little weight in colder months.

Avoid Wet, Damp Conditions
Damp fur makes your Cavoodle feel the cold faster. Dry them off thoroughly after rainy walks or baths with a microfibre towel or a doggy hair dryer set on low. (like this one HERE)

Regardless of what type of jacket you choose, always:

    ·      Check the fit: Coats should be snug but not tight. Look for adjustable straps or stretch panels.

    ·      Test it indoors first always under supervision: Let your Cavoodle wear their new coat around the house to get used to it.

    ·      Wash it regularly: dirty coats can cause skin irritation.

    ·      Make sure your dog stays hydrated & doesn’t overheat: you want to make sure your cavoodle always has access to water and watch if they are overpanting as it may man they are overheated and do no need a coat.

Keeping your Cavoodle warm doesn’t need to be complicated — it’s about finding what suits their personality and your lifestyle.
